Mindful eating is all about paying attention to the way we eat.
Research has shown eating mindfully improves digestion, regulates our appetite and helps us enjoy our food so much more.
How can I eat more mindfully?
Begin with your shopping list – Consider the health & well-being value of every item you add to your list and stick to it to avoid impulse buying when you’re shopping.
Eat when you are hungry -If you skip meals, you may be so eager to eat anything that your first priority is filling the void instead of enjoying your food. Start to notice how often you get hungry and plan eating times accordingly.
Bring all your senses to the meal – When you’re cooking, serving, and eating your food, be attentive to the colour, texture, aroma, become aware of the sounds different foods make as you prepare them. As you chew your food, try identifying all the ingredients, especially any seasonings.
Take small bites and chew thoroughly – It’s easier to taste food completely when your mouth isn’t full. Put down your utensil between bites and chew well.
Eat slowly – Eat your food slowly, savour each mouthful and notice how each flavour and texture make you feel. Notice how, with this focused and undivided attention, the flavours are heightened.
Stay in the present moment – Anytime you feel swept away by thoughts of the past or future, notice that your mind has drifted and encourage your attention back to the present moment.
